Maybe you’ve seen the tragic young professional holding his head in his hands. “I can’t believe I bought a toaster with no bagel setting,” the caption reads.

Google that hashtag today and you’ll find remnants of the meme that Alan Cranston conjured in 2012 when he invited us to stop instagramming our breakfast food and start making a difference. The implication was that it might have been bad form for us to complain about slow Wi-Fi at Starbucks while people were starving in Africa.

So we gave ourselves a good mocking and got over it.
