It’s a two-way street, I think, a law of attraction, but we do well to reflect every now and again on what’s good about our lives. So much bright magic in the world. So much to be grateful for.

Creative outlets are essential to my sanity. Access to quiet places, too. And people, in moderation. I do love my cat. But not cat food. Of course, my cat loves cat food, God knows why, but this isn’t about her. Not currently. Sometimes, she wears a tasteful scarf.

For the elevator speech, these bundle as “marketing generalist and performer,” though many days it feels like, “Great question! What DO I do for a living?”

Speaking of which, I continue to observe among people my age an enthusiasm for whitewater rafting, for ziplining, for parachuting and bungee cord jumping, rappelling and motocross, for parkour, fire eating, shark wrestling, and all things X-treme, all of which serve to remind me that my own appetite for adrenalin is embarrassingly small.

Rather, I prefer one-on-one and small group activities and tend to avoid the spotlight when I’m not on stage, which makes me hard to spot in a crowd, I guess, although people do sometimes notice how I keep my pants from falling down. So yes, I wear suspenders, always, and no, I’m not a farmer or a clown.

And I usually have a book in progress. Lots of classics and science fiction on the shelves. A sprinkling of history, too, and sociology/political science. Haruki Murakami was a revelation. Magical realism really whips the llama’s ass.

As to music, ambient/drone is my current tonal comfort food. At other times, classical, cool jazz, lounge, and world. I also have a weakness for the pop music of my youth in ever smaller doses. Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” would be an example, as would AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” even though I still don’t understand most of the lyrics.

As to movies, I prefer art house cinemas to multiplexes, and indie films to most major studio releases. Which isn’t to say that I’m completely Merchant Ivory-proof. I’m probably more omnivorous as a moviegoer than as a consumer of anything else.

As to matters ineffable, I’m absolutely certain that we’re spiritual beings, connected to each other, to the planet and to the infinite in some profoundly positive way. Other topics likely to pique my interest include tiny homes, universal healthcare, living off the grid, democratic socialism, and many lines of inquiry ghettoized by corporate media as “fringe.”

On the other hand, I haven’t owned a television in decades and read newspapers with extreme prejudice, so I’m probably too far out of touch with consensus reality for my opinion of it to be valid. I’ve also been in and out of rehab for a podcast addiction that I’m advised I’ll struggle with for the rest of my life.
