Deep cleanse

In Last and First Men (1930), science fiction writer Olaf Stapledon described a process of evolutionary trial and error played out over billions of years, humanity evolving and devolving, advancing and retreating, drifting planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy like a fragile cloud, the final iteration no more obviously related to 21st century man than 21st century lizards are. The human gene pool poured into an exponentially larger ocean of possibilities.
